This really deopends on what breed of dog you have, if you have a big dog like a Labrador then about three years old is fine and if you have a small breed like the bichon thentwo years of age is about right. this is because the younger the dog is the less developed they are, bones development of their systems etc, they simply have not matured enough. It would be a bit like a pre teen having a baby. As you can imagine, this can lead to complications in the pregnancy and birth. Let you puppy be a puppy and if she is a good temperment, good health then consider breeding her to a equally good dog.

I can't agree with the first answer enough. I've had quite a few grooming clients have to re-home their pets because of the recession and get stuck with puppies they thought they could sell. Plus, when I volunteered for the GSPCA I couldn't believe how many pets needed homes. Since the recession hit the surrender rate has skyrocketed. I strongly encourage all of my clients to neuter their pets. Not only will it keep down overpopulation it will also reduce the risk of your pet getting cancer of the reproductive organs and mammary glands. Not to mention calming them and reducing behavioral problems.

Hi there, the main reason you shouldn't breed from a bitch that young is simply that she's too young! Bitches come into heat at around 9mths of age. They are usually just learning to be their own characters at that stage so it's advised they wouldn't make "suitable parents!" However, as a vet nurse, unless you are experienced in dog breeding, we advise getting the bitch neutered, preferably before the first heat. It is of no benefit for her to go through various heats or have multiple litters later in life. Especially now in the recession it is horrible to see more and more dogs been abondoned simply because breeders wanted to make a bit of money. So please - think carefully as to why you want to breed from your wee one and get all the advise possible from your local vet first as to what is involved. Good luck :-)
