Hi Minipal,
I understand that this can be frustrating for you so here are is some information on how we train dogs successfully who come to us with those behaviours. Firstly as you probably know the Cockerpoo is a combo of Cocker and Poodle both highly intelligent and active breeds. This means that your 9 month old has a basic requirement for mental stimulation and exercise daily. She will also need considerable social contact at 9 months as she is going through adolescence right now and some dogs find that easier than others. These behaviours are generally born out of frustration and/or a lack of understanding as regards what the owner wants from her. If she is alone for long periods or bored during the day the worse these behaviours will present and the worse they will get. I would suggest you train her to understand voice cue's for example SIT, LEAVE IT. Putting her into a sit or pushing her into positions will not teach her anything apart from the fact that she is being put into a certain position plus if her owner has limitations we would really want the dog to be able to obey voice cues reliably. It may be benefitial for you to attend a good training class so as you can get the basics but for now use food or toys to lure her into the position you want, say the word SIT and reward. The more you repeat and practice then you can phase out the food lure. Feedback is vital at her age when she gets something right. So if she doesn't jump tell her good settle or good sit. You are now at a stage where a behaviour has developed and she highly reinforces from the result of the behaviour. If ignoring does not work for you simply use the words TOO BAD and then pop her into another room for a minute or so and then let her in again. Once she is calm reward her. Simply things such as calm = lead on, sit = food bowl, sit = rubs etc will help to train her also. You cannot punish her if she does not understand her words so teach her some new ones. For now SIT would be a start so as you can prevent the jumping up. At 9 months she should be through mouthing stage so you will need to catch up a little with that. Teaching bite inhibition is important now at her stage and for her to have a soft mouth. If you check out www.dogstardaily.com and search bite inhibition there are excellent articles there to help. Finally cockerpoos do much better on a high grade food such as Luath or Robbies, burns or James Wellbeloved. One without animal derivatives and preservative. Do not give her supermarket brand foods or canned food as she will have too much energy. Use KONG toys filled during the day to mentally stimulate and if her owner is really finding it too difficult tell her to pop her up to Dog Daycare where we can do some ground work with her. We only use ethical training methods and we are very successful with dogs like her. I hope this helps. Well done so far and keep up the good work. hi
i have been training a long time now. everything from obedience to competition dogs. thee answer to all dog problems is lots of training. 1 - jumping up. turn your back on the dog when it jumps up. push them into the sit position & ask them to ''be nice'' or calm what ever word you choose. then treat when they understand what is the wanted behavior. as for biting in a growl type voice firm say NO when the pup bites & throw them a toy so they understand the difference between hands & toys. hope this helps remember there are many ways of training & NO one way is correct. just never train in anger, never ever strike your dog & never punish harshly. |

I agree, using sharp sounds when they go to bite/jump usually snaps them out of that action and overtime they learn its not so much fun anymore. I saw a programme once where they put pulses/small stones in a empty tin can and then when the dog went to mis behave the person made a loud noise with the tin. I dose give them a little fright but you should only need to do this a few times. They will match the loud not nice sound with biting/jumping and lose interest. Might not be something you want to try but thought I would post it here, its an option.

hi ya, one thing to try is to yelp like another puppy or when puppy jumps up lightly queeze pad on puppies paw each time it jumps up eventually should stop also roll up a news paper and bang against the moblity chair or on table to get attention and start basic training. dogs trust have great advice on there site. dogs in distress have some tips but they also recommend dogs trust.
