Hi,
I have a Boxer dog who is nearly 5 years old and he did gain a lot of weight when he was younger. I knew that I was not overfeeding him but he got to 38kg and the vet took a blood test which showed that he had an underactive thyroid, note it did not show up in the test results at first until a year later. Therefore you can have the condition but it may not be detectable at that very moment. Just keep an eye on his hunger and I know it is hard not to give him an extra food but he might not be able to control his hunger. So now my dog gets one tablet a day to control the condition which you can get free on insurance which is great because he will have to take it for life. My dog did develop other symptoms such as loss of his coat and being down in himself (dogs get depression too!). The 3 foods I have feed him are Royal Canin vet specialist foods of Weight Control, Obesity Management and Satiety Support, these all have a lot of fibre to fill their tummys so that they feel fuller! Talk to your vet and they should be able to guide you in the right direction even though it might take you some time but your dog will be happier for it like mine! Hope this helps and Take care charlotteerika Source(s): I reference the food in this link: http://www.royalcanin.co.uk/vet/clinical_diets/canine_clinical_diets.aspx |

The brand of food I recommend is from Land of Holistic Pets. Their 'Working and Sporting Breed' formula has higher fat and protein content ideal for large breed puppies. As for quantity, puppies who get a lot of exercise need to be fed more often. I always recommend puppies get fed 3 small meals a day (his size 1cup 3X daily). It's easier on their digestive organs than 2 larger meals and it keeps their blood sugar from spiking then dropping resulting in extreme hunger.
When more protein is needed I recommend adding fresh raw chicken, lamb, or fish to their kibble along with sunflower oil for added essential fatty acids (EFAs). Adding more protein and not more EFAs can make it harder on digestion. Proteins, fats, and carbohydrates work synergistically to break each other down. Plus the added EFAs help with shedding and dull dry coat/dander. Check any brand of food you give your pets and make sure there are no ingredients like corn, beet pulp, yeast, wheat, soy, beef, dairy or pork products. They either spike glycemic levels and cause sugar crashes or digestive upset and allergic reactions. To be sure your dog doesn't have worms I like infusing fresh crushed garlic in sunflower oil and drizzling it over the food. It rids the body of parasite and even prevents fleas and ticks come summer. Source(s): http://www.landofholisticpets.co.uk/ http://www.tailwaggers.ie |

Ahhh, he's probably just going through a growth spurt, just like us humans do. I'd give him a little extra, or maybe try a food with more protein content.
