could someone tell me what the best breed of dog to get with children (5 yrs) and small animals?

I would have to say bernese mountain dogs (I have a beautiful female). They are so gentle. I have an autistic 6 year old daughter that is constantly sitting on her and pulling her ears and tail. But my gentle giant just turns around and gives her hand a big lick. They are the calmest dogs ever, but they are only good if you want a big dog because they grow to be between 100-150 pounds.

Maltese!! Loads of personality and super with kids. Daisy gets her ears and tail pulled all the time by the little ones and she's never even growled. There is lots of great child friendly breeds out there, maybe speak to your local rescue/animal shelter and ask them what type they recommend. They may even already have the dog your looking for!
