Guinea pigs have teeth that grow continuously and are worn down by eating a healthy diet. Their teeth should only need to be trimmed if they are overgrowing. This can be caused by malocclusion (when the teeth do not meet properly and so do not wear down evenly) or other dental disease. The front teeth (incisors) are visible when you lift the lips and so are easily checked. The back teeth (molars) are more difficult to examine but your vet will be able to do this. Overgrown incisors can often be a sign of dental disease in the back teeth. Symptoms of dental disease include weight loss and a decreased appetite. If you notice these you should get your guinea pig checked out.
An appropriate diet is very important for maintaining your guinea pigs health and this includes their dental health. Their diet should be rich in fibre and vitamin C. Allowing them to graze or providing good quality hay will supply this. The diet can be supplemented with a good quality pelleted diet which has vitamin C included. Sweet treats and watery vegetables (such as iceberg lettuce and cucumber) should only be fed in very small quantities. For more information visit our website or contact your local veterinary practice. I hope this helps! Source(s): www.biarhillvets.ie Sign in to vote! |
