10 Ways To Properly Look After Your Dog

Written by Jessica Mannering Monday, 08 March 2010 13:21

Working with animals for the past 20 years I learned a thing or two on how to properly care for them. I’ve condensed that knowledge into ten easy steps...

1. Brushing- Slicker brushes are the best tool for keeping up with a long coat for both detangling and seasonal shedding. A once a year brushout is painful and traumatizing. Brush your dog once a week for regular maintenance and a pain free experience.

2. Medium Tooth Comb- To be done after brushing. Make sure you get the comb right down to the skin to lift up the undercoat and prevent it from matting to the skin.

3. Trim Nails- With all breeds, no matter the size or weight, nails must be kept up on. I cannot stress this enough. If they are not, your dog will end up with a condition called ‘slipped wrist’. It’s an arthritis that results in a double jointing of the wrist. It’s very painful and your pet will no longer want to walk around to get the exercise it needs to stay young and healthy. If you are too nervous to do it, bring them to a professional. It’s usually only a fiver.

Otto, the black cocker spaniel owned by Kate Middleton is in the dog house after eating a pair of very expensive antique pearl earrings bought by the prince for Kate's 28th birthday. Adorable Otto has a habit of chewing things including shoes and even a coffee table. A friend said: ‘Kate flew into a panic. She was on the floor, looking under the bed, she searched the entire house but couldn’t find them.  'When she went back upstairs, she spotted that a couple of things on her bedside table had been moved around and the tube of handcream she keeps there had tooth marks in it. Click here to read story in full...

Top Tips For Shedding

Written by Jessica Mannering Friday, 05 March 2010 15:12

It’s about that time of year where seasonal shedding is starting to happen. Usually twice a year your dog or cat will shed it’s entire undercoat leaving a glossy thinner topcoat that’s easier to maintain. I say usually because most pets are kept indoors and the seasonal shed can happen all year long from the heat going on in the house. This is what I refer to as ‘non-seasonal’ shedding. Another example of non-seasonal shedding is when the animal’s topcoat also sheds. This should never happen as it is a prime example of an essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency and/or food allergy.

Paul Railton, 23 of Annfield Plain, Co Durham has been banned from the road after he was caught walking his dog whilst driving his car and holding the lead out of the window. A passing cyclist alerted the police and Railton was fined £124 and given three penalty points. He already had nine points on his licence so it meant he had reached the disqualification threshold.

Paul Donoghue, defending, said: "He accepts it was a silly thing to do, borne out with an element of laziness." Needless to say, please don't try this at home!

Benefits Of Neutering

Written by Donal The Vet Monday, 01 March 2010 13:40

Spaying
is a surgery done by a veterinary surgeon under general anaesthesia to remove the uterus (womb) and ovaries. It is the safest and most effective method of controlling your pet’s reproduction. It is done from 4 - 5 months of age and before the first season. All females should be spayed unless they are to be bred. Pets do not put on weight as a result of spaying; if she does it is because of over feeding. Her temperament will not alter, and she may become more settled and home-loving. Some large dogs can develop urinary incontinence as a result of spaying. Treatment is required and is usually successful.

Benefits of Spraying Your Female Dog...

- Reduces the overall risk of cancer by more than 50%
- Prevents a life threatening womb infection called pyometritis.
- Stops twice-a-year seasons.
- She cannot become pregnant.
- Stops false pregnancy - commonly occurs after a season and is extremely distressing for your pet.
- Reduces the risk of developing diabetes mellitus.
- Reduces the risk of road traffic accidents – because of looking for a mate or being chased by male dogs.

Donal Ryan together with his team of experienced veterinary surgeons and nurses are dedicated to keeping your animal happy and healthy. For more information check out the cityvet.ie website.
