Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of a joint and any joint can be involved. Signs of arthritis include a painful or stiff joint and a grating sensation on movement. Fever and redness in the skin over the joint can also occur.

Several joints can be inflamed at the same time and may be associated with complex internal disease. Degeneration of the joint from aging, inherited conditions, infection, infections passed into the joints through the blood, allergic or immune-mediated disease and cancer are causes of arthritis.

X-rays and laboratory tests may be necessary to determine the type and severity of the arthritis. Arthritis is usually a treatable rather than a curable disease. The aim of treatment is to minimise discomfort and delay or prevent deterioration in the joints.

I am Donal Ryan, a veterinary surgeon. For as long as I can remember I have loved animals. I grew up in the countryside surrounded by farm animals, but it was the dogs at home I enjoyed most + I still really enjoy caring for pets everyday at Cityvet.ie.

Donal Ryan is the principal veterinary surgeon at CityVet. He has over 25 years experience caring for and treating small animal patients in California, the U.K. and Ireland. He has a keen interest in orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery and runs a referral service for many veterinary surgeons in the region.
