Spaying

Spaying is a surgery done by a veterinary surgeon under general anaesthesia to remove the uterus (womb) and ovaries. It is the safest and most effective method of controlling your pet’s reproduction.

It is done from 4 - 5 months of age and before the first season. All females should be spayed unless they are to be bred. Pets do not put on weight as a result of spaying; if she does it is because of over feeding. Her temperament will not alter, and she may become more settled and home-loving. Some large dogs can develop urinary incontinence as a result of spaying. Treatment is required and is usually successful.

Castration - dogs: Castration is surgical removal of both testicles under general anaesthetic. It is safe and has no detrimental effects on health or behaviour, regardless of the patient’s age. The surgery can be done from about 4 months of age. Castration eliminates the possibility of developing testicular cancer, the second most common cancer in male dogs, and greatly reduces the risk of prostatic disease, and the risk of other types of cancer in dogs. Other benefits include reducing aggression, urine marking and straying. Dogs with retained testicles (not in the scrotum) should always be neutered because this testicle is 13 times more likely to become cancerous. In addition, all neutered animals live longer

Castration - cats: Castration of male cats is recommended strongly as it reduces the tendency to roam, to fight and eliminates the strong unpleasant urine odour associated with un-neutered male cats. FIV is a feline AIDS disease spread by cat bites and is most common among un-neutered male cats.
