OBESITY

Being overweight is the most common nutritional disease in the dog and cat

It is more common with age and in females. About a third of dogs are overweight and at least 10% of cats are obese. Overweight pets generally have more ailments and a shorter life span.  Obesity often reduces the pet's enjoyment of life and the owner's enjoyment of their pet.

The cause of obesity is simply that the pet is being over-fed for its level of activity. Feeding home-cooked meals, table scraps, treats and snacks are more likely to cause being over weight. Your pet is thin or normal if the ribs are easily felt.  Your pet is overweight the ribs are difficult to feel.  You pet is dangerously obese of the ribs cannot be felt at all.
