Is Pet Food Harming Our Pets?

An article recently published advised that commercial processed foods could actually be harmful to pets. Increasing concerns about obesity, lack of nutrition, poor behaviour and other health problems including cancer have been linked to tinned, pouches and even dried biscuits pet foods. The pet food industry is now worth over €200 million and the demand for convenience pet foods is on the increase. We now see scraps from the table and the local butchers replaced with foods that are full of additives many of which are harmful. TV vet Joe Inglis says: 'Over the past few years, many additives have been banned from human food, but pet food is still pumped full of similar chemicals.'

Nows the time for commerical manufactures to disclose honestly what is really in their foods. I also think action needs to be taken in banning harmful artificial chemicals from pet foods full stop. Recent research by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association shows that one in three household pets are now overweight and conditions such as diabetes, kidney and liver diseases, heart disease and dental problems are on the increase due to bad diet. Sadly there is not enough independent information because there is little research not funded by the pet-food industry available.

So really what can we do to make sure our pets are getting the best possible diet and nutrients? Choose a pet food with the correct ratios of 40% meat, 50%veggies and 10% gain or carbohydrate. Ensure the meat protein sources are high in the ingredient list. Watch out for added by-products and fillers. Avoid pet foods that use chemical preservatives BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin. Choose premium brand dog foods over cheaper brands. I recently read the ingredient list of a particular tinned dog food and was shocked to find it contained 'ash'! If it doesn't sound right its probably best to avoid and if you want to make sure your pet is getting the right food then consider 'Holistic Pet Foods' which are 100% natural and nutritious. You can read more about holistic and home remedy products in our news section and welcome any advice or knowledge you may have on the subject.

I don't want to scare anyone but hope this helps you make a more informed decision and would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Feel free to bark your views in the comments section below!
