Keeping parrots as pets is a relatively new phenomenon in Ireland, and as a result there are few resources for our feathered friends here. I started www.parrots.ie to try to address this shortfall, giving Irish Parrot owners and breeders a place to find all of the information they might need, from sourcing food and toys, to help with behavioural issues and a place to chat about their parrots. There is a forum on the site, which is the only dedicated parrot forum for Irish owners and breeders.
If you are considering keeping a baby hand reared parrot, you should always remember to do your research. Different birds have different requirements, but all parrots need time out of their cage every day and all birds make noise, some rather more than others!
My expertise in parrots comes from keeping a large flock including Éalú a rescued blue and gold macaw, 2 African greys, conures, kakarikis, cockatiels, and a little rescued budgie we have called Dodgy. Over the years I have learned a lot about parrots from other breeders, pet owners and from the internet, and I have tried to include some of that knowledge on www.parrots.ie
I also breed small parrots in my aviaries and bird house, and I hand rear the babies. All of my babies are reared in my home, with my children, dogs and other birds. So they are well adjusted little birds when they go to their new homes. My whole family gets involved in the feeding, and raising of these birds, helping them to fledge, to learn to perch, to teach them the step up command, and if the new owner requests it, we also harness train our babies.
My aim is to enrich the lives of all parrots living in Ireland, either by providing their owners with the knowledge and resources to help their pets, or by taking in unwanted birds into my home to rehabilitate.
