Dogs Trust Campaign Against Puppy Farming
Written by Barbara Hanly on Sunday, 10 January 2010
Dogs Trust UK has launched a campaign highlighting the increasing problem of puppy farms which is also a huge problem here in Ireland. Dogs Trust have used the term 'battery farming of dogs' to associate the practice with the battery farming of chickens. Celebrity supporters include funny man and Irish native Graham Norton and TV presenter Jenni Falconer.
Dogs Trust have called for an immediate review of dog breeding licensing legislation and are on a mission to stop the vile and cruel trade. Dogs Trust says ''that though 95% of dog owners say they wouldn’t buy a dog from a puppy farm, nearly a million may have done so without even knowing.'' In the last six months calls from concerned dog owners who unknowingly bought puppy's from these farms and now have dogs with all types of illnesses have been on the increase. This is a huge problem on our shores too but with the recent development in breeding legislation things are moving in the right direction, finally.
If you are looking to buy a puppy and don't want to buy from a puppy farm then these are things you should keep in mind:
- Ask can you see the puppies with their mum because a lot of dealers looking to make a quick buck buy these puppies in. If you are told you cannot see it's mum and living conditions then the chances are it's a farmed puppy.
- Good breeders will ask questions, if it seems to easy be wary.
- Puppy should be wormed and vaccinated.
- The mum should be no younger than one.
- Make sure the puppies are weaned. Puppies must be at least 8/12 weeks old to leave their mum. If they are not weaned it could mean the breeder has lied about their age and puppies could be much younger.
- Avoid any breeders advertising more than three different breeds.
- If in doubt, contact the Irish Kennel Club for recommended breeders and if you wish to report a breeder then please write to your local authority describing your experience.
PetChums.com prohibits the sale of any animals on the site and support the fight to abolish this cruel trade where profits are being made over the welfare of animals. It has to stop and it has to stop now. To show support for this campaign please go to the Dogs Trust website for further information.
